Portmeirion Stuff

Posted on July 23, 2026July 23, 2026 by Liz Collins

A miscellany of stuff we have come across about Portmeirion (we may add to it).

For most people Portmeirion is famous as the 1960s location of the cult TV series The Prisoner, and the 1976 Doctor Who story The Masque of Mandragora. You can also see lots of episodes of The Prisoner on You Tube. Younger listeners might like to catch up with older Mekonistas via ITV-Retro (where you can even see a Ken Dodd Show). Remember this: a Rover is a white sphere of variable size which serves as a watchdog for the keepers of The Village. Here is the first episode of the prisoner in glorious colour:

More important than any cult telly series from before the time of the Sex Pistols is Clough William-Ellis, the powerhouse behind Portmeirion. He had some interesting ideas about Urban Development which he wrote about in his book England and the Octopus, you can read it on Archive Org. There is also a very pithy critique of the ideas in the book at the Urban Design Group. If there are any Design types who would like to comment on Clough William-Ellis’ ideas do get in touch. You know who you are! Clough William-Ellis also wrote a book about Portmeirion (Portmeirion: the place and its meaning) which, thankfully, is available on Archive Org.
